LOCATION - Province of Neuquén, Argentina. - 38º55'S, 71º08'W; 1125 m above sea level. B. DESCRIPTION Lake Aluminé is located in a transverse valley in the Andes mountain range in a region with moderate annual precipitation (900 mm) that falls mostly during the winter months. The mean annual temperature is 4ºC, with extremes at 35ºC and -12ºC. It is located in the plateau-mountainous range ecotone. Humic andesite soils prevail but the vegetation is sorely deteriorated due to fires and deforestation. Erosive processes are manifest. The dominant species in the higher-lying areas are "ñire" (Nothofagus antarctica) and "lenga" (Nothofagus pumilio). "Ciprés de la cordillera" (Austrocedrus chilensis) and "araucaria" form dense forests towards the western end of the valley. It is from this end that Lake Aluminé receives its main affluent, the outlet of Lake Moquehue. Other tributaries are the Del Arco and Chañy brooks. The lake's outlet gives rise to the Aluminé River. On account of its transparency as well as its nutrient and pigment content, it is considered an oligotrophic lake(1). C.
